  • Paddle longer. Recover faster. Protect the ears you kayak with for life.
  • Bollsen’s patented (D961,757 USPTO) medical-grade silicone seals out cold water and wind — the exact combination that causes exostosis.
  • Stays in through rolls, wet exits, and full submersion.
  • Add AR KI TECH ear measurement for a precision fit that won’t shift mid-session.
  • Blocks cold water and wind: Cuts the exact stimulus — cold water + wind — that causes kayaker’s ear (exostosis). Prevent the bone growth before it starts.
  • Stays in during a roll: Precision-fit silicone doesn’t shift or pop out. Your roll won’t cost you your earplug.
  • You can still hear your paddle partners: Reduces wind roar and water rush. Lets through voices, calls, and warnings at normal range.
  • 100 sessions from one pair: Medical-grade silicone outlasts foam, neoprene inserts, and cheap generic plugs by months.
  • Your exact fit, guaranteed: Two photos of your ears. AR KI TECH finds your canal size. No loose-fit guessing for water sports.
  • Sea kayakers and touring paddlers exposed to cold headwinds.
  • Whitewater kayakers who roll regularly and need a plug that stays put.

Frequently Asked Questions: Earplugs for Kayaking & Paddling

This is the question every kayaker asks first — and it’s the right question.

Generic foam or loose silicone earplugs are not designed for submersion. They rely on outward pressure to stay in place, and the moment your head goes under at speed, water pressure equalises and the plug shifts or floats out.

Life+ uses a precision-fit 2-lamellae silicone seal matched to your exact ear canal diameter via AR KI TECH. The seal works with the canal geometry rather than just pressing against it. Paddlers who roll regularly — including whitewater kayakers doing 3-4 rolls per session — report it hasn’t shifted in 40+ sessions of full submersion.

The key is fit. A plug matched to your ear doesn’t just reduce the chance of falling out — it effectively eliminates it. That’s why we offer AR KI TECH sizing as an add-on: so your roll doesn’t cost you your earplug.

Kayaker’s ear — the informal name for exostosis — is abnormal bone growth inside the ear canal triggered by repeated exposure to cold water and cold wind. Your body reacts to the stimulus by growing protective bone. The problem is that bone keeps growing, slowly narrowing the ear canal over years and decades.

In the early stages it’s symptom-free — you won’t notice it. As the canal narrows further, water gets trapped more easily, infections become more frequent, and eventually hearing starts to be affected. In advanced cases, the canal is almost entirely blocked.

The only treatment is surgery: drilling out the bone growth under general anaesthetic. NHS waiting times for this procedure currently run 12–18 months in most regions. Private surgery costs £2,000–£5,000. Recovery means no paddling, no swimming, no water in the ear for 4–8 weeks.

The condition is essentially irreversible once it develops — and it develops gradually, with no pain warning. Many paddlers only find out they have it at a routine ear check years into the problem. Cold water paddling without ear protection is the primary cause. It is entirely preventable.

Yes — and this distinction matters enormously for on-water safety.

Life+ is rated at 24 dB attenuation. That means it reduces the ambient noise floor — wind roar, water rush, wave impact — while preserving directional sound at conversational volume. Your paddle partner calling out from 10 metres away is a directional, relatively high-frequency sound that still reaches you clearly. The wind howling in your ears on a long Atlantic headwind crossing is what gets reduced.

In practice, many paddlers report that wearing earplugs actually improves their ability to hear paddle partners — because the constant wind roar that masks voices is reduced. You stop having to shout across the gap.

For rescue situations: whistle blasts (used as distress signals) are sharp, high-frequency sounds that penetrate attenuation very effectively. The 24 dB reduction Life+ provides does not prevent detection of an emergency signal.

Partially — but not completely, and not in the way that prevents exostosis.

A neoprene hood reduces thermal exposure to the outer ear (the pinna) and slows water ingress slightly. It does not seal the ear canal. Cold water still reaches the canal on a roll or capsize, and wind still flows across the canal opening when your hood shifts or you turn your head.

Exostosis is caused specifically by cold water and wind reaching the ear canal, not the outer ear. A hood without earplugs leaves the canal exposed. ENT consultants who see exostosis patients regularly note that many of them did wear neoprene hoods — the hood alone is not adequate protection.

Life+ worn under a neoprene hood creates a complete system: the hood handles thermal and surface exposure, the earplugs handle canal protection. They are complementary, not redundant.

Some earplugs can create a pressure sensation underwater — typically those that form an airtight seal without a vented channel. The feeling is similar to descending quickly in a swimming pool: an uncomfortable equalisation needed.

Life+’s 2-lamellae silicone design creates a water-blocking seal while allowing minimal pressure equalisation through its structure. The vast majority of users report no uncomfortable pressure sensation on submersion. If you have any pre-existing ear drum perforations or significant existing exostosis, consult your GP or ENT before using any earplug for water sports — but for healthy ears, pressure is not a documented issue with this design.

Exostosis requires two conditions: cold water and cold wind. Flat water paddling still exposes you to both — especially in UK conditions where canal and estuary paddling involves prevailing westerlies and water temperatures averaging 10–15°C.

You are less likely to roll on flat water, which reduces acute water ingress — but the wind exposure during a long canal or coastal paddle remains. Sea kayakers doing flat-water crossings in headwinds are some of the most consistently exposed group, because the wind doesn’t stop even when the water is calm.

Exostosis develops cumulatively over years, not from individual high-exposure sessions. Consistent low-level exposure on flat water adds up the same way as occasional whitewater exposure. Protection is relevant regardless of water type.

No — and this is one of the most important questions to get right.

Exostosis can progress at varying rates, but it is directly driven by ongoing cold water and wind exposure. Stopping that exposure slows or halts progression. Multiple ENT consultants who work with surfers and paddlers note that patients who begin wearing properly fitted earplugs after an early-stage diagnosis rarely need surgery — the bone growth stabilises when the stimulus is removed.

A paddler reviewed above was diagnosed with early-stage exostosis and switched to Bollsen immediately. Their 18-month follow-up showed no progression. That is not a guaranteed outcome — everyone’s progression rate is different — but removing the cause is the only non-surgical tool available.

If you’ve been diagnosed with exostosis and want to keep paddling: this is urgent, not optional. Continued unprotected exposure accelerates the progression that ends in surgery.

Life+ is made from medical-grade silicone, which is inherently non-porous and water-resistant. When correctly fitted to your ear canal, the 2-lamellae design creates a water-blocking seal — water does not pass through or around the plug.

The critical variable is fit. A plug that’s too small for your canal will shift and allow water ingress regardless of the material. This is precisely why we offer AR KI TECH sizing: a plug matched to your canal diameter seals correctly and stays sealed. A generic off-the-shelf size is an approximation — it may seal, or it may not, depending on your individual anatomy.

If you’re using Life+ for water sports specifically, we strongly recommend adding AR KI TECH at checkout. The difference between a fitted and unfitted plug in cold UK water matters.

Rinse under warm fresh water after every use. For sea paddling, a 30-second fresh water rinse removes salt residue. For river paddling, the same rinse clears any particulate. Once a week, mild soap and warm water, then air-dry before returning to the carry case.

Medical-grade silicone is non-porous, so bacteria and organic material do not penetrate the material — they sit on the surface and rinse away easily. Unlike foam earplugs, which absorb moisture, salt, and debris and cannot be effectively cleaned, Life+ maintains hygiene across 100+ uses with basic rinse care.

Each bollsen set includes your Life+ earplugs in medical-grade silicone, a compact carry case, and a Fit Guide. If you’ve added AR KI TECH sizing, your plugs are precision-matched to your ear canal measurements before dispatch. Free UK delivery via Royal Mail, arriving in 1–3 working days. Returns and exchanges are free if the fit isn’t right.

Used 60+ sessions across sea kayaking and whitewater. Zero material degradation the silicone hasn’t softened, warped, or lost its seal. First earplug I’ve found that survives real paddling conditions long-term.

Exostosis Surgery Costs £3,000. Life+ Costs £26.95.

Exostosis: bone growths in the ear canal from cold water and wind affects the majority of paddlers who never wear ear protection. Surgery is the only cure. NHS waiting lists run 12–18 months. Private: £2,000–£5,000. Recovery means weeks off the water.

A single BOLLSEN Life+ costs just 27p per paddle over 100 uses. The 10x Pack drops that to 10p per session.

That’s not a decision. That’s arithmetic.

Finally Paddle Without Worrying About Your Ears

Cold UK water. Headwinds off the Atlantic. Every session on the water is a session your ears are under attack — unless you protect them.

BOLLSEN Life+ creates a medical-grade seal that blocks cold water and wind from reaching your ear canal. From your first paddle.

No more cold rush of water mid-roll. No more wind roar building into a headache by the halfway point. No more dreading what your next ENT appointment might find.

Just time on the water — the way it’s supposed to feel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Swimming Earplugs

Yes. This is the question every swimmer asks first, and for good reason. The conical 2-lamellae design locks to your ear canal rather than sitting loosely inside it. Body heat causes the silicone to adapt to your exact canal shape within the first few minutes, forming a secure seal. Customers report zero slippage through butterfly sets, tumble turns, and open water swell. The tab gives you full control for easy removal without tugging.

Yes, when they seal properly. Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is caused by water sitting in the ear canal and breaking down the skin’s natural protection. Watersafe+ blocks water from entering the canal entirely. No water in means the bacteria in pool water and open water have no route to cause infection. Customers who switched to Watersafe+ after recurring infections consistently report zero ear infections from that point. If you’ve had recurring swimmer’s ear, getting the right size is essential. Use AR KI Tech if you’re unsure.

Yes. Watersafe+ is not designed to block all sound. The 2-lamellae silicone seals water out while still allowing approximately 24 dB of ambient sound through. In practice, you can hear your coach calling instructions from the poolside, whistles, and safety signals from kayakers in open water. What you lose is the underwater roar. What you keep is everything you actually need to hear.

Very likely yes. Cold water entering the ear canal triggers something called caloric vestibular stimulation — cold water hitting the eardrum disrupts the balance signals your inner ear sends to your brain, causing vertigo and disorientation during and after long swims. It’s a well-documented phenomenon in cold water and open water swimming. Blocking cold water from reaching the eardrum removes the trigger. Several of our customers discovered this was the cause of their post-swim dizziness only after Watersafe+ eliminated it entirely.

Watersafe+ is doctor-recommended for exactly this use case. If you have tympanostomy tubes (grommets), a perforated eardrum, or a post-surgical ear, water entering the canal is a serious risk. Watersafe+ forms a medical-grade silicone seal that keeps water out completely, making it safe for showering, bathing, and supervised swimming. Always confirm with your ENT or GP first, particularly in the early stages of recovery.

Place the earplug on the tip of your finger and gently twist it into your ear canal with a slight rotating motion. It should seal the canal fully without needing to be forced. Once inserted correctly, you’ll feel the ambient sound reduce slightly. The tab sits flush outside the canal for easy removal. For the best seal, make sure you have the right size. If the standard version doesn’t feel secure, the AR KI Tech measurement will get you the exact fit for your ear canal.

Nothing. You have 40 days to test them in the pool, in open water, in the shower. If they leak or you’re not satisfied for any reason, contact us and we’ll refund you in full. No questions, no forms, no back and forth. Over 1 million customers and +330 five-star reviews. But you don’t have to take our word for it.

Training Block Complete. Race Season Uninterrupted.
I compete in triathlon and had DNSd two events the previous season because of ear infections picked up in open water training — each one meant a week out of the water right when I needed to be training hardest. I was meticulous about Watersafe+ from the first session of this season. Zero infections across eight events and a full training block. I finished my target race in a personal best time and credit the uninterrupted preparation as a significant factor.

Swimmer's Ear Fixed. Eight Months and Counting.
My son is a competitive swimmer training four days a week and for eight consecutive months we'd had monthly GP visits for swimmer's ear. It was affecting school, training and his general mood. Watersafe+ junior fit properly and — critically — he didn't complain about wearing them, which every previous attempt had run into. Eight months have now passed without a single GP visit for anything ear-related. The relief is enormous.

Grommets Intact. ENT Happy. Mum Relieved.
My eleven-year-old had grommets fitted and the ENT consultant was clear that pool water ingress needed to be avoided or the tubes could be damaged and the procedure repeated. I'd had to withdraw her from the swim team which was upsetting for everyone. Watersafe+ provided the seal the ENT had said was necessary. At the six-month review both grommets were intact and infection-free. She's back in the swim team and competing again.

Finally Cracked the Swimmer's Ear Problem
I swim competitively and had been through four ear infections in a single training block — a nightmare when you're training five days a week and each infection means time out of the pool. My coach suggested trying Watersafe+ and I admit I wished I'd done it sooner. I completed a full 16-week block without a single infection. The fit was secure enough that I stopped thinking about it and just focused on swimming.

Full Competition Season With No DNS Results This Year
My 12-year-old daughter competes in swimming galas and the previous season saw six missed competitions due to recurring otitis media — each one a real disappointment after weeks of training. Watersafe+ changed everything. She wore them at every session and gala, and made it through a 22-event season without missing a single one. Watching her finish every race was something I'd started to take for granted that she'd never be able to do.

230 Sessions. Zero Ear Infections. One Full Season.
I do masters swimming at a 50m county pool — five sessions a week — and the previous season had been disrupted by seven ear infections, each requiring drops and time out of the water. It had started to badly affect my race preparation. I wore Watersafe+ from the first session of this season without exception. Zero infections across 48 weeks and over 230 swims. My club times improved significantly, partly, I think, just because I was actually in the water consistently.

Five Ear Infections in One Term — Then Zero
My seven-year-old daughter picked up five ear infections in a single swim term and every time it meant time off school, GP visits, and a miserable few days. I'd tried cheaper alternatives that either didn't seal properly or fell out after a length. Watersafe+ fitted well and — more importantly — stayed in. The following two terms passed without a single infection. My daughter doesn't complain about wearing them and I'm a total convert.

Otitis Externa: Three Times in One Season
I train for triathlons and do four swim sessions a week — a mix of open water and pool. I'd had three bouts of otitis externa in a single season, each one setting my training back by a week or more. I switched to Watersafe+ and wore them for every session without exception across a full 20-week prep block. No infections. My coach said I was the most consistent in training I'd ever been. I think a lot of that came down to not losing weeks to ear problems.

Ear Plugs for Swimming
I bought 2 pairs for my child to use in her swimming training. Trying to prevent recurrent ear infections. It took a few attempts to get used to wearing them. We had one instance where one of the ear plugs fell out in the pool (but she found it!). We think this is because one of the plugs is slightly squashed (was like that when arrived) so doesn’t fit quite correctly. We swapped for the other pair and was fine. Bit disappointed that one ear plug can’t be used, but other than that good product. If anyone knows how the squashed one can be corrected let me know.
